Regarding Islamic eschatology, an important point to highlight, where a majority of Sunni and Shi'ite scholars agree, is the coalescence of the Islamic world, both Sunni and Shi'ite, under one caliph, for the first time since the "Rashidun" period. The arrival and the ascension of the Mahdi (peace be upon him) signify a much-anticipated unification of the Islamic World, which is the core prerequisite for the re-establishment of a caliphate, in the same spiritual order as that of the Prophet (peace be upon him) himself and his immediate successors. The subsequent hadiths about the arrival of Jesus and the role of Mahdi (peace be upon them both), along with his followers, at that moment, signify a reconciliation between Muslims and Christians - a relation that has been marred considerably with time due to unfettered imperial ambitions on both sides.

It can be inferred that the Second Coming represents the culmination of history, and a microcosm of divine justice of earth, to, fittingly, bring history to its end in the holy land, to mark a permanent distinction between those who make an earnest effort to live under divine regulations and honor the moral order, and those who knowingly and obstinately rebel against Him.
