Apart from the extreme vagueness of "the West", which I suppose does seem more definite as seen from Russia, slavery has characterised most human societies known to history. While serfdom was no doubt a more typical Russian institution, I don't see that being a serf was necessarily much better than being a slave. In any case, vast slave trades existed in Europe, Africa, and Asia from the earliest times. Americans often seem to take the "credit" for "creating slavery", but nothing could be further from the truth. Most slave traders simply bought people already enslaved by fellow-Africans or Asians. Although I do not know the facts, I suspect that slavery was practised in the Americas before the advent of Europeans.
