The problem is that drug cartels have been fed by Washington since their beginning. This new rhetoric of a "cartel war" is just an artifice.

Drug cartels exist thanks to mexican and US government

Exactly. 75 percent of the cartel guns are American made and bought just over the border. Mexico doesn't have open air gun markets like America.

"open air gun markets like America"

We don't actually have those.

Ordinary Americans can't buy fully automatic weapons, grenade launchers and their ammunition & such arms "over the counter". We can, with a federal background check (and often a waiting period) buy semi automatic or other rifles (with bores of .50" caliber or less and barrels at least 16" long), semi automatic or other types of pistols (without a front grip, shoulder stock or barrel longer than 12") and similar types of shotguns (with barrels at least 18" long). There certainly has been a cottage industry in buying such weapons more or less legally (or stealing them) in USA and smuggling civilian grade guns into Mexico.

Yet the cartels have been seen with plenty of fully automatic/select fire rifles and machine guns. Grenade launchers with grenades. Even light antitank weapons.

Yes, most of that weaponry too WAS made in USA or at least exported from the USA to an "end user". But the military grade weapons and ammunition were got mostly from that sold or given to central/South American militaries and police, including the Mexican military and police forces-

Some particularly stupid things involving US federal law enforcement surely sent more guns to Mexico as well (see project "gunwalker"), but the diversion of military stuff from your neighbors to the South + the US resident "cottage industry" of civilian arms straw buyers/smuggling are the sources of a majority of the cartel weaponry entering Mexico and originating from USA.

I reside in Mexico and it is common knowledge that all presidential candidates are vetted by the US govt. Imagine if a pro Russian candidate emerged who would invite Russians to train and arm their military. Very likely the candidate would disappear
